Spice Up Some Lives is an annual benefit we started as good friends wanting to throw a Halloween costume party for the people we adore. As there are five of us, we thought it would be fun to host in full drag as the British Pop Queens, The Spice Girls. Having never done drag, a few of us needed a little more of a push to put on heels, dresses and wigs, so the idea of creating a benefit for the Ali Forney Center was born.
On Friday, Oct 25, 2013, we had our first benefit at Elmo Restaurant's Private Lounge - filled with costumes galore, great music, raffle & costume prizes and a special Spice Girl tribute drag performance...all for a good cause! We were blown away by the overwhelming support we received for the event and The Ali Forney Center - whose mission is to protect LGBTQ youth from the harm of homelessness, and support them in becoming safe and independent as they move from adolescence to adulthood. We strongly feel that today's youth can never have too much love, which made the Ali Forney Center an easy pick as a foundation to support. It was very important to each of us, however, that the money we raised would go directly to the teens. So, more specifically, the donated money was used to purchase over 700 items on Ali Forney's Amazon.com "Wish List" in 2013 and over 1200 items in 2014 - a list of simple necessities for the individual teens in the shelters and drop-in centers such as boots, thermal clothes, backpacks, coats and sanitary kits. It is our plan to continue this annual event with a tribute to a different musical artist or group each year. We hope you will join us in striving to help teens feel more supported, stable and loved. Together we can make difference and SPICE Up Some Lives! |
